A greater focus should be put on inner-city train stations when it comes to meeting housing infill targets in the greater Perth region which continues to sprawl, says a crossbench MP.

The greater Perth area, which includes metropolitan suburbs and the Peel region, had the lowest percentage of flats and apartments out of all Australian capital cities, according to the latest census data, at 7 per cent of 851,322 dwellings.

The government says it is making good progress towards a target of 47 per cent infill by 2050 with infill development reaching 43 per cent in 2019 and 44 per cent in 2020.
