The head of the state’s peak land development group says WA will miss out if it does not get its act together on housing.

Urban Development Institute of Australia WA chief executive Tanya Steinbeck says Western Australia needs to “get its act together” to access federal funding to address the housing shortage.

Speaking to Business News at today’s Shelter WA Housing Symposium, Ms Steinbeck said the federal government’s recent commitment to deliver 1.2 million homes over the five years to 2029 as “very very ambitious”.

She expressed concerns about the ability for the state’s building industry to meet these demands, but says she is hearing “mixed messages” from builders, with some saying they are ready to take on more work.
