State Election Campaign

In mid-2024, in advance of the 2025 State Election, UDIA WA prepared a comprehensive State Election Platform and Campaign outlining priorities for the next State Government to continue to leverage industry to deliver the homes we need, faster.

Our specific recommendations were focused on actions required now, to support immediate housing supply and to set WA up for a more sustainable forward pipeline.

Policy Positions

As the community creators, the development industry is integral to the future development of the places that we all live, work and play in. Our capacity to deliver those places is being constrained by outside elements that must be addressed if we are going to keep a lid on housing affordability. We want Perth to remain one of the most affordable capital cities in Australia and we also want to ensure that property remains a strong investment option.

Immediate issues including dire skills and labour shortages need to be addressed, as well as longer term challenges such as further streamlining regulatory processes and reforming outdated taxation regimes.

We also need to work together and bring the community along for the journey toward Perth becoming a more compact and connected city. Without a shared understanding and commitment to that end goal, resistance to future development will continue.

UDIA WA’s policy positions are an articulation of where we stand on key matters of relevance in supporting our members and the broader industry in working towards a vision of ‘diverse living options in thriving, connected communities’. They guide and underpin our advocacy and stakeholder engagement activities.

Pre-Budget Submission

Each year, UDIA WA puts together a set of recommendations for how the State Government should allocate funds in the upcoming State Budget.

We have outlined well researched and evidence-based investment recommendations across three key areas:

  1. Making it easier to create the homes we need
  2. Helping to keep the cost of homes down
  3. Planning for our housing needs now, and for our future

Some of UDIA WA’s key ‘asks’ include:

  • Additional funding for Water Corporation for capital works to support residential development
  • Extending and expanding the Infrastructure Development Fund
  • Creating a facility for low interest mezzanine finance loans and underwriting of stock to boost medium and higher density project viability
  • Funding to scope and progress the development of an online platform for WA’s planning & development system
  • Building on the initial investment in the $400m Housing Enabling Infrastructure Fund

These key asks and several more are clearly articulated, including the estimated funding required for each ‘ask’, in our Pre Budget Submission.

UDIA WA was encouraged by the Cook Government’s housing policy before and during the State Election campaign that was translated into commitments in the last State Budget. We are now looking to the 2026-27 State Budget to prioritise further investments that will continue to meaningfully accelerate housing choice and supply.
