State Election Campaign

In mid-2024, in advance of the 2025 State Election, UDIA WA prepared a comprehensive State Election Platform and Campaign outlining priorities for the next State Government to continue to leverage industry to deliver the homes we need, faster.

Our specific recommendations were focused on actions required now, to support immediate housing supply and to set WA up for a more sustainable forward pipeline.

Policy Priorities

UDIA WA’s Policy Priorities for 2023 have been developed in the context of the need to address some of those lingering impacts of the pandemic, while firmly focusing on the future and ensuring sustainable economic growth for the State.

As the community creators, the development industry is integral to the future development of the places that we all live, work and play in. Our capacity to deliver those places is being constrained by outside elements that must be addressed if we are going to keep a lid on housing affordability. We want Perth to remain one of the most affordable capital cities in Australia and we also want to ensure that property remains a strong investment option.

Immediate issues including dire skills and labour shortages need to be addressed, as well as longer term challenges such as further streamlining regulatory processes and reforming outdated taxation regimes.

We also need to work together and bring the community along for the journey toward Perth becoming a more compact and connected city. Without a shared understanding and commitment to that end goal, resistance to future development will continue.

At the crux of our priorities are the core pillars of economy, liveability and environment. Working collaboratively with all levels of government to deliver on these priorities, we believe our industry is ideally placed to play a key role in the continued success and growth of our State for the benefit of all Western Australians.

Pre-Budget Submission

Each year, UDIA WA puts together a set of recommendations for how the State Government should allocate funds in the upcoming State Budget.

Western Australians continue to feel the very real pressures of increasing cost of living, declining housing affordability and lack of options for a place to call home. Acknowledging the Cook Government’s efforts to date, now and for our future, the 2025-26 State Budget presents an opportunity to continue to prioritise investments to leverage industry to deliver the homes we need, faster.

UDIA WA continues to advocate for a strategic approach to accommodate our rapidly growing population that removes unnecessary barriers and costs to development, streamlines approval processes, and ensures infrastructure is delivered where and when it is needed.

The first budget of this new term of Government represents a critical opportunity to fully fund important State Election Commitments and build additional momentum for addressing WA’s ongoing housing supply challenges. The investment recommendations outlined in our submission seek to:

  • Make it easier to create the homes we need;
  • Help keep the cost of homes down; and
  • Plan for our housing needs, now and for our future.

UDIA WA has welcomed the positive and collaborative relationship we have had with the Labor State Government and we and our members stand ready to continue working together to create great places and housing choice to enable Western Australians to live better lives.
