The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has developed a new online gateway for water and environmental assessments and approvals.  Water Minister Dave Kelly says the new gateway will act as a ‘one stop shop’ for project applicants that will save time and improve response times.  UDIA would welcome feedback from members who utilise the new system.

Better waste management in WA

The state government is hosting eight workshops to provide an opportunity for the community to engage in a discussion on the new waste strategy. The workshops will launch in Perth on February 1, 2018 with subsequent sessions in Albany, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Geraldton. There will be three workshops in Perth.  The consultation paper, which is open for public comment, looks at opportunities to improve Western Australia’s waste and recycling performance which is lagging behind that of other Australian States.  More information and registrations for the workshops are available via the Waste Authority here

The State Government has also launched a funding program for projects that ‘champion better waste management practices and improve awareness of the need to reduce waste.’ $1 million is available to eligible projects.  Find out more here

National housing finance and investment corp – have your say

UDIA National has been working with the federal government to ensure industry feedback is incorporated into the draft legislation on the National Housing and Investment Corporation. This exposure draft Bill gives effect to the Government’s 2017/18 Budget commitment to establish the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC). Public comment on the Bill is open until Monday 22 January, if you wish to find out more, visit https://treasury.gov.au/consultation/c2018-t252521/

Further calls for stamp duty reform

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has released a ‘Stamp Duty Watch’ report that reveals stamp duty bills have increased almost three times faster than house prices since the 1980s, with a typical stamp duty bill of $20,587 adding an average of 3.1 per cent to a dwelling price during December 2017.  The dependence of Australian states on stamp duty revenue worsened significantly, accounting for 26.1 per cent of tax revenues during 2015-16 – the highest share since 2008-09. UDIA is an advocate for Stamp Duty reform in Western Australia, advocating for a broad based land tax system to be transitioned into operation over a number of years.  More information on the HIA report can be found here
