The state government is continuing its push for greater density around train stations, while singling out projects in Cottesloe potentially impacted by the change.

Planning Minister John Carey spoke at an Urban Development Institute of Australia WA breakfast this morning, where he unveiled the draft improvement scheme for 10 train station precincts.

The improvement plans, flagged late last year, will mean that the state government will override local councils in 10 local government areas.

Under the changes, developers will be allowed to build up to 20 storeys within an 800 metre radius of these stations.

Rather than a blanket measure for allowable heights within these zones, each precinct will have a core area of high density and an area of medium density, where between two and eight storeys would be allowed.

Ballajura, Bassendean, Claisebrook, Cottesloe, Glendalough, Morley, Mosman Park, Redcliffe, Swanbourne, Carlisle and Oats Street are currently impacted by the scheme.

Planning Minister John Carey said the government would announce 10 more stations precincts where density would be encouraged in the new year.

“Ultimately, we want to see the majority of train stations with the same consistent approach, with high density then transitioning to lower density,” he said.
