A major revamp and expansion of Perth’s rundown Convention and Exhibition Centre has been officially shelved, less than two years after it was embraced by the Cook Government as a “bold” vision.
The West Australian has revealed that stakeholders were told on Wednesday that the Government intended to renege on the deal, nervous over the $1.6 billion price tag and ongoing backlash over its $217 million Burswood motor racing and entertainment proposal.
The price of the project, long supported and encouraged by senior government ministers, included road and rail works as well as a hotel and two residential towers. The backflip also throws into limbo plans for Rio Tinto to relocate its new headquarters to the precinct.
