The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA WA) continues to actively engage with all levels of government in order to deliver more homes, faster.
Having consistently advocated for a bipartisan approach to planning, the formation of a Select Committee into Land Development and Planning put forward by the Opposition is demonstrative of the continued politicisation of the system which facilitates desperately needed homes for Western Australians.
“UDIA WA looks forward to the opportunity to present to the Select Committee, highlighting the commercial and market realities of development within a complex regulatory environment that have not been considered in debating this motion in Parliament,” UDIA WA CEO, Tanya Steinbeck said.
The private sector delivers approximately 95% of all housing supply across Australia and is critical to the delivery of diverse housing supply across the continuum. Working collaboratively with industry is essential in addressing housing supply and affordability challenges.
“Developers respond to the housing demands of a rapidly growing population, taking significant commercial risk in navigating an overly complex and duplicative regulatory framework across three levels of government. Industry welcomes clarity and certainty but not at the expense of greater cost and complexity which exacerbates supply and affordability pressures,” Ms Steinbeck said.
“UDIA WA supports community engagement and input into the planning strategies and schemes that shape development in their local area. Greater education and understanding of our planning system in the context of constraints facing industry is essential to make balanced, well-informed planning decisions, “ Ms Steinbeck said.
“We welcome an evidence-based discussion on how to improve the planning system for all stakeholders that is focused on outcomes over politics, and how to deliver more homes for those who need it,” Ms Steinbeck said.
