Former premier Colin Barnett has deemed Elizabeth Quay a success nine years after opening it, but has warned against spending too much money on a revamped waterfront convention centre.
While EQ is now Perth’s most exclusive business address, Mr Barnett said there was plenty of criticism in the early stages of development.
Mr Barnett’s waterfront vision — a $440 million, 10ha inner-city hub — was initially controversial.
“The reality is that when in opposition, Labor discredited it as a white elephant,” he recalled.
But almost a decade after he cut the ribbon, he was pleased to see the standard of development at EQ, crediting the first high-rise by Chevron for setting the standard.
