Perth’s suburbs of the future are going eco-friendly. Alkimos has succeeded in putting a solar panel at every home. A free solar panel is given to families who build their homes in Alkimos. The panels save energy by day when people are out of their homes and store it at the communal battery. By night, homeowners get to enjoy free energy from the battery. The Surf Life Saving Club in Alkimos is built from recycled materials as is the community hub. They say residents of Alkimos save up to $4,000 a year. Eglinton homes get a free smart meter to monitor and help reduce consumption. Allara has introduced a community bike-sharing system, for just 50 cents anyone can borrow a bike and cruise the streets. These suburbs have topped the Urban Development Institute’s list of Perth’s most sustainable suburb. The four top suburbs in the list include Alkimos, Allara, Rosehill Waters, and Bushmead.
