The state government will try to reform the social housing wait list amid concerns the most desperate people are unable to access a home.

Currently sitting at more than 20,000 individuals or families on the list, the government will create a new matrix in the hope that more vulnerable people can get to the top of the queue faster.

“West Australia’s current model was introduced in the 1950s,” said Housing Minister John Carey.

“It hasn’t kept up with the pace or complexity in terms of housing needs, and it hasn’t kept up with the rest of Australia.”

The two-tiered system of those either on the standard waiting list or those on a priority list will be changed to include a register of interest.
