Sophie Howe, the world’s first “future generations commissioner”, has given Western Australia a series of recommendations surrounding the creation of the 2050 Commission in a new Forrest Research Foundation report.

Launched on Friday, the foundation’s latest Perth Dialogue by Ms Howe – who was the future generations commissioner for Wales from 2016 to 2023 – explores building long-term thinking into public decision-making.

In Perth 2060: How planning for future generations can make us wealthier today, Ms Howe argues WA’s planned 2050 Commission is “potentially one of the most significant opportunities to embed longer-term thinking into the machinery of the WA government”

The 2050 Commission will replace Infrastructure WA and take on the broad inquiry functions of the Economic Regulation Authority.

Legislation is being introduced this year to create the new body.
