This is a hands on course designed to provide civil construction knowledge from concept and design through to approvals, construction, and final handover. Participants will gain real world insight into the fundamental processes and inputs, key stakeholder interactions, risks, approvals, and challenges, and approvals and clearances, that influence time, cost, and quality outcomes in residential land development.

Course Summary

Introduction to Civil Construction for Residential Projects is a one day course and half day site visit delivered by experienced industry professionals focusing on providing a practical, end-to-end overview of how residential developments are delivered from a civil construction perspective in Western Australia. This is a must-do course for anyone that needs an understanding of how to effectively work with and manage the civil engineering and construction inputs to residential projects.

Day 1 – The program begins with a full day of classroom-based learning, where participants are introduced to the key stages involved in the civil engineering and construction processes for residential development projects from planning through to delivery, the roles of key stakeholders, and the fundamental principles that underpin successful outcomes.

Day 2 – On the second day, participants take part in a half-day site visit, offering valuable real-world insight into construction development phases and processes, with insights from the developer, civil consultant, contractor and service agency perspectives.

DAY 1 : Classroom Learning

Fundamentals of Civil Construction for Residential Projects

  • Types of construction, key construction stages and site layouts
  • Key stakeholders and their roles across different project stages
  • Common risks, costs, and current market pressures

Pre‑Construction Phase

  • Civil design phase
    • Overview of the process and key stages
    • Fundamentals for scoping e.g. key engineering requirements
    • Fundamentals for commissioning and managing consultant inputs
  • Overview of tender process, contract setup, budgets, and mobilisation
  • Approvals and clearances for titling
  • Utility and local government requirements
  • Managing neighbours, land clearing, and environmental considerations

Construction Phase

  • Programs, inspections, and safety obligations
  • Unexpected ground conditions and delays
  • Cost escalation, supply chain challenges, and labour shortages
  • Contract variations, extensions of time, and risk management
  • Managing residents, stakeholders, and compliance issues

Completion & Handover

  • Steps required for practical completion and clearances
  • Utility handovers and energisation
  • Title release and defect liability periods
  • What builders and developers need early for successful handover

DAY 2: Site VisitThe Mundi Estate – Mundijong

A guided site visit to a live residential development provides the opportunity to:

  • See different construction stages in action and understand site safety requirements
  • Hear directly from developers, contractors and service providers (Western Power and Water Corporation)
  • Connect classroom learning with real‑world application

Health and Safety while on site: PPE will be required to be worn while on site. High visibility vests and hard hats will be provided but participants will need to wear their own suitable footwear (preferably steel cap boots but as a minimum, flat enclosed shoes).

Travel arrangements: Participants will be required to make their own travel arrangements to and from the site.
