John Carey has accused the state opposition of promoting mistrust in the state’s planning system, by its call for a review into the decision-making process of planning authorities.

Speaking at an Urban Development Institute of Australia WA event this morning, the State Planning Minister referred to the Liberal Party’s recent call for a review into the planning system.

“The members of the WA Planning Commission and our planning staff conduct themselves with the highest level of integrity,” he said.

“We used to be bipartisan on this. Remember, the DAP (development assessment panel) system was brought in by [former Liberal Party minister] John Day.

“But we have one side of politics, a number of members, including the leader of the opposition, who are now peddling fear and mistrust in our planning system.

“We should all be concerned by that; we need more housing, and having a streamlined planning system is part of that.”

The WA Liberal Party has publicly called for a committee to review the state’s planning system, which is set to be decided in the Upper House via a debate on August 13.
