The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA WA) is thrilled to announce a major sustainability milestone – DevelopmentWA’s Ocean Reef Marina has made history, officially becoming the first marina development in Australia to receive full EnviroDevelopment certification.

This prestigious, independently assessed program recognises excellence in sustainable design and construction across six key category ‘leaves’ ecosystems, waste, water, energy, materials, and community.

Ocean Reef Marina has secured all six leaves, setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible coastal developments nationwide.

“This certification is a huge achievement and a true testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the DevelopmentWA team,” said UDIA WA CEO Tanya Steinbeck. “They are raising the bar in relation to sustainable urban development.”

With world-class amenities, a vibrant mix of shops, cafés, restaurants, and expansive public spaces, Ocean Reef Marina is shaping up to be an iconic coastal destination for WA.

It will also be home to thousands of future residents, offering a truly liveable, future-focused community built with sustainability at its core.

The project’s energy innovations are particularly impressive with the implementation of a renewable energy microgrid featuring a ground mounted solar array, which will be expanded with rooftop solar installations as the development progresses.

The microgrid battery system will be powered by ‘Ocean Reef Renewable Energy (a Zenith Energy company)‘ – one of Perth’s first large-scale renewable energy microgrids in a development of this kind.

Smart City technology will also be integrated throughout, with smart meters, smart parking and intelligent lighting systems to optimise water and energy use.

There is also a strong focus on native landscaping and biodiversity to foster thriving green spaces and tree canopy throughout the area.

In a major win for waste reduction, up to 80% of construction waste is being diverted from landfill – with recycled materials repurposed for use in roads, car parks, drainage and more.

“Ocean Reef Marina is more than just a beautiful coastal precinct—it represents a bold vision for Western Australia’s future. By integrating sustainable design, renewable energy, and community-focused spaces, it sets a new benchmark for coastal development.

This transformative project will not only enhance our state’s livability, but also drive economic growth, tourism, and innovation for generations to come,” Ms Steinbeck said.

DevelopmentWA CEO Dean Mudford said, “With Stage 1 on track to open in 2026, Ocean Reef Marina is set to become a world-class tourism and lifestyle destination. It will offer a vibrant blend of housing, thriving local businesses, and year-round attractions—built on a strong foundation of environmental sustainability.

“This certification reflects our dedication to delivering forward-thinking, environmentally responsible developments that improve the lives of Western Australians.”
