If medium density development continues in its current form, every duplex, triplex or low-rise dwelling would cost the community $29,000 over the next 20 years, according to Rita Saffioti.
Speaking at a function hosted by the Urban Development Institute of WA last week, Ms Saffioti said the current proliferation of medium density housing had undermined how livable some areas were.
The State is seeking to create a new set of guidelines, due soon, that would ensure the design of individual dwellings that contribute to green, neighbourly communities and to livable, well-ventilated spaces.
