The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA WA) has welcomed the approval of the Iconic Scarborough project by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA), saying it will set a high standard for future development in the Scarborough region.

“The Iconic Scarborough project will provide a catalyst for much needed further private sector investment and regeneration in the Scarborough redevelopment area and sets a very high standard for future developments,” UDIA WA CEO Allison Hailes said.

“The project has had strong support from the local community as well as local and state government agencies,” Ms Hailes said.

“The high quality design and visionary nature of the proposal will hopefully influence further projects,” Ms Hailes said.

“The Iconic Scarborough development will be a fantastic example of what can be achieved along our coast and will assist in furthering Perth’s reputation as a must visit destination on a global scale,” Ms Hailes said.

“The amazing three level viewing deck, the WA Coastal Experience Centre, hotel and proposed retail space will all add to the local amenity and provide benefits to the broader Scarborough area,” Ms Hailes said.

“Not only does the project set a high standard for future development, hundreds of short and long term jobs will be created both during construction and in local employment on completion,” Ms Hailes said. “Not to mention the boost to tourism and surrounding local business.”

“In the current economic climate that is good news for the people of WA.”
